Lexington Adoption Office

The goal of the 45 staff members of the Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF) Lexington Adoption Office is simple: to provide “forever families” for local children and youth. This goal is accomplished by the matching unit, which matches local children with families in Allegheny County, across the state and around the country; the termination of parental rights unit, which searches for parents who may not be listed or are considered “unreachable”; and the caseworkers, who do home studies and help to facilitate the adoptions.

Adoption Day Family 1“Last year, we placed approximately 245 children in adoptive homes,” said Denise Allen Brown, Regional Office Director, Foster Care and Adoption. “Every time that we are able to place a child and watch their eyes light up, we have experienced a great success.”

One of the office’s largest events is National Adoption Day. Held annually on the third Saturday of November, National Adoption Day is a collective national effort to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children in foster care waiting to find permanent, loving families.

Locally, the 2012 event was held on November 17 at the Allegheny County Family Law Center. Families and their guests were provided with food and drink and entertained by balloon artists, a ventriloquist, a magician, Ronald McDonald and Eat’n Park Smiley. Most importantly, 42 children between 16 months and 17 years old had their adoptions finalized during the event.

“Even though National Adoption Day provides us with an opportunity to celebrate, there are many children who are still waiting for the chance to become part of a family,” Denise said. “We are always looking for people willing to open their hearts and homes to provide what all children deserve – safe, happy, healthy lives.”
