Employment and Training for Youth

Youth employment and training services are offered through a variety of in-school and out-of-school providers.  In-school providers work through programs in area school districts and Afterschool programs. The focus is education and career preparation for teenagers 14 to 18 years old.  Out-of-school providers give a hands-on educational experience through vocational training. Classes such as machining or computer repair are taught with the focus of gaining valuable skills that lead to training-related employment. There is also a program for pregnant and parenting youth who left high school before graduating and are receiving TANF.

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps provides education awards and real world experience in exchange for a year or two of community service. DHS offers opportunities for AmeriCorps members to serve full-time or part-time (as little as 15 hours per week) for a full year starting in the fall.  There is also a summer program where you can serve full-time for 11 weeks.  Call 412-350-3344 or visit www.keysservicecorps.org for more information.

EARN

The EARN program is designed to help persons who receive TANF and/or Food Stamps get a job or get a better job so they can earn more than they receive from public assistance. People who are interested in participating in EARN must get a referral from their County Assistance Office (CAO) caseworker.

EARN offers assistance all along the path to better employment – from improving basic academic skills to assisting with child care and transportation, through offering supports during the first six months of your employment.
