About the Senior Celebration in the Park
The first Allegheny County Senior Celebration in the Park was hosted by Allegheny County in May 2009 to celebrate Older American’s Month. The theme for the month, “Living Today for a Better Tomorrow,” prompted a celebration that included activities, food and demonstrations that promote a healthy lifestyle. The event enticed more than 2,500 older adults and 150 volunteers to the County’s South Park fairgrounds. Most of the guests arrived by ACCESS from one of 61 area Senior Centers. Nearly 100 providers of services of interest to older adults were present to inform. Entertainers, including headliner The Rick Purcell Band featuring Shari Richards, took the stage or performed among gathered guests. Guests had the opportunity to win donated prizes by visiting provider tables. Sponsors of the event included the Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging, and the County departments of Parks, Public Works and Special Events. Highmark contributed breakfast fare for those in attendance.
