Prevention 101

Prevention 101 encourages participants to take an active role in their health by getting their recommended preventive care exams and screenings based on recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Highmark’s Preventive Health Schedule.
The merits of preventive exams and services are clear: it’s estimated that 70% of chronic conditions are related to lifestyle and therefore, preventable. Preventive care means getting the right kinds of preventive health services – screenings, counseling, immunizations and preventive medicine – at the right times. It’s about protecting one’s health by “knowing what you need and when to get”. Prevention 101 engages the individual and their dependents in obtaining regular preventive care through awareness, education and self-motivation.
People are often unaware of the preventive services that are recommended for their age, gender and risk factors. In addition, they do not consider themselves to be at-risk or are uncertain about the effectiveness of certain preventive services. Prevention 101 provides an intervention to promote appropriate utilization of preventive services.
