Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or its equivalent AND a minimum of one (1) year, full-time experience as either an investigator for a court or government agency, a law enforcement officer, an insurance field investigator, a direct service provider for convicted adults or delinquent/dependent children, a licensed private investigator, or as an investigator for a licensed private investigation agency. Applicants MUST also have a demonstrated writing ability. Applicants with an advance degree including an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in a related field, or who have at least three years practical experience with entities that have investigative facets such as police or litigation departments, etc., or who have experience in relevant areas including mental health, probation, social work, criminal justice or related field are preferred. Applicants who have a demonstrated commitment to working with diverse communities and a challenging client population are also preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Applicants must be able to pass a criminal background investigation prior to appointment. |
Duties:
- Timely locates, interviews, and transports as necessary witnesses, victims, clients, etc.
- Timely delivers subpoenas to witnesses and obtains written records.
- Develops leads and maintains reliable sources of information.
- Assesses crime scenes.
- Prepares detailed, computerized reports of investigations.
- Prepares professional diagrams, maps, and trial exhibits.
- May perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Pennsylvania Law.
- Standard practices and procedures associated the position of Investigator.
Ability to:
- Testify competently and professionally in court concerning findings of investigations.
- Identify conflicts of interests that may prevent the OPD from representing or continuing to represent a client.
- Maintain the confidentiality of case related information.
- Work within the confines of a non-police investigation.
- Must have a valid Pa Drivers License and ability to work weekends and evenings, as assigned.
Residency: Must become a resident of Allegheny County within one (1) year of appointment.
Veteran's Preference: Will be awarded to eligible candidates.
