| Minimum Requirements: Law Degree from an accredited law school and admission to practice law before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Preference will be given to applicants having at least one (1) year experience in legal representation of a social work nature or juvenile court experience. Admission to the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania is preferred. |
Duties:
- Provides legal counsel and advice to County departments, particularly the Department of Human Services.
- Drafts legal documents such as petitions, opinion letters, and briefs.
- Attends Juvenile Court dependency hearings representing the Office of Children, Youth and Families.
- Attends hearings before various agencies such as the EEOC, Department of Public Welfare, the State Labor Board and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission.
- Attends and actively participates in trials in Federal and State courts; argues the County’s position in Federal and State appellate courts.
- Performs other related duties as required or requested.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Juvenile Act and Child Protective Services law
- Social service issues and providers
Ability to:
- Assess client situations and communicate well, both orally and in writing
- Work with a diverse, challenging client population
- Prepare various legal documents
- Review and analyze proposed laws, rules and regulations
- Develop strong working relationships with attorneys, juvenile justice system personnel, and other agencies
Residency: Must become a resident of Allegheny County within one (1) year of appointment.
