Job Title: Forensic Evidence Specialist
Department:   Medical Examiner's Office

SALARY:  $2,137.14 per month

Minimum Requirements:
A High School diploma or its equivalent AND One (1) year of general office experience, to include the use of a personal computer.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Duties:

  • Receives and stores evidence submitted by law enforcement agencies, and other clients.
  • Safeguards and maintains the integrity of all evidence and chain of custody in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Maintains organization and general cleanliness of evidence and file storage areas.
  • Coordinates activity between submitting agencies and the Laboratory in the handling of evidence.
  • Acts as an interface between the Laboratory, submitting agencies, and District Attorney’s Office.
  • Provides administrative support functions to assist the Director, Laboratory Managers, and Laboratory Staff.
  • Appears in court to testify as to the procedures followed during receipt, storage, and transfer of evidence throughout the Laboratory.
  • Conducts inventories of all evidence and oversees the release, destruction, and subsequent paperwork of same.
  • Archives, maintains, stores, and organizes case folders.
  • Performs other related duties as required or requested.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Applicable laws relating to integrity of evidence and chain of custody
  • General office practices and procedures including filing, recordkeeping, and use of fax, copier, PC

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Establish effective working relationships with managers, co-workers, outside agencies, and the District Attorney’s Office
  • Testify in court as to the procedures followed during receipt, storage, and transfer of evidence
  • Pass a security clearance
  • Use a personal computer
  • Lift and carry 70 pounds

Residency: Must become a resident of Allegheny County within one (1) year of appointment
