Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma or its equivalent AND completion of a mechanic’s apprenticeship program and two (2) years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic OR six (6) years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic.
A current, valid PA Class B CDL license and hand tools for the job are required prior to appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Duties:
- Troubleshoots and rectifys heavy equipment problems.
- Welds, burns, and fabricates as needed.
- Performs periodic services and preventive maintenance on all equipment.
- Operates equipment.
- Inspects equipment for condition and safety, and prepares reports regarding maintenance requirements.
- Prepares parts lists and orders parts per Department and County procedures.
- Communciates with operators and supervisors to resolve problems.
- Performs other related work as requested or required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Heavy equipment maintenance and repair to include hydraulic systems, diesel engines, fluid drive systems, electrical systems (12v and 24v), computer systems, brake systems, and cooling systems
Ability to:
- Operate and repair equipment such as rubber-tired hi-lifts, track hi-lifts, backhoes, excavators, pavers, road wideners, roller, tow-behind air compressors, road graders, skid-steer hi-lifts, forklifts, generators, high-volume pumps, gradall, snow groomers, etc.
- Stand, walk, sit, use hands, fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
- See clearly at twenty feet or more and judge distances and spatial relationships.
- Lift in excess of 100 pounds.
- Work under adverse weather conditions and in high, precarious places and a loud work environment, with frequent exposure to fumes, airborne particles and equipment vibration.
- Work various shifts and be on-call 24/7.
- Acquire and maintain a PA Class B CDL license and hand tools.
Residency: Must become a resident of Allegheny County within one (1) year of appointment.
