The Kane Regional Center in Scott Township celebrated Mardi Gras with a party and a history lesson.

“It was a really great party. We really hadn’t done anything like that in recent years,” said Marci Donovan, Kane Scott Recreation Therapy Supervisor. “The residents seemed to enjoy it. The decorations were great. We discussed the history of Mardi Gras during the party. It was fun and educational.”

Originally, the Keystone Oaks High School Jazz Band was scheduled to perform during the Mardi Gras event, but the snowy weather led to school cancellations and prohibited the students from playing. Instead, Kane Scott residents participated in trivia games, a finish-the-tune contest and enjoyed the crowning of the Mardi Gras King.

The recreation room was decorated with New Orleans style lamp posts, street signs and purple, green and gold balloons. King cake and purple punch were served.

“It was quite a festive atmosphere and really made our residents’ day,” Donovan said. “We hope to continue this tradition in future years.”
