Staff and residents at Kane Glen Hazel had to turn to Plan B, but a celebration of Mardi Gras still was a hit at the Allegheny County run residential skilled nursing care facility.

Originally, the band Mon Gumbo was set to play during a Mardi Gras event at Glen Hazel, but two members of the three-person band were ill. The performance was postponed to a later date. Instead, the Glen Hazel staff implemented a Mardi Gras Bingo Party, including Mardi Gras themed music and decorations. Beads were distributed as prizes.

“While we would have loved to enjoy Mon Gumbo’s performance, we adapted and our residents and staff still had a great time on this festive occasion,” said Kathi Lindsley, Therapeutic Recreation Manager at Kane Glen Hazel. “Events such as these are important to our residents. These gatherings provide a great opportunity for residents to socialize and have a good time.”

Lindsley said she hopes Mon Gumbo will be rescheduled either as a “Spring Fling” or perhaps during national nursing home week in May.
