PITTSBURGH — Allegheny County Economic Development and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission invite the public to two workshops to discuss revitalization and economic development efforts around the Sheraden and Carnegie stations on the West Busway. The input from residents, transit users and other stakeholders will be used to create transit-oriented development plans for the station areas.
The Sheraden workshop will take place on Tues., March 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sheraden Senior Center located at 720 Sherwood Avenue in Pittsburgh. Only the Sheraden station area will be discussed at this meeting.
The Carnegie workshop will be held on Wed., March 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Council Meeting Room at the Carnegie Borough Building located at One Veterans Way in Carnegie. Only the Carnegie station area will be discussed at this meeting.
The workshops will begin with a brief presentation about the effort and an overview of transit-oriented development. Participants will then break into small groups to discuss the types of amenities, improvements and developments that could enhance quality of life and provide work/live/play options in the station areas. The results of the visioning exercise will be shared at future workshops in the station areas.
The West Busway Transit-Oriented Development Plan is co-sponsored by Allegheny County Economic Development and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission in partnership with the City of Pittsburgh, Borough of Carnegie, and Port Authority of Allegheny County. The project is an implementation activity of Allegheny Places, the County’s comprehensive plan, and the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission’s 2035 Transportation & Development Plan.
Transit service to the Sheraden workshop is available via Port Authority routes 100, 26A, 26B, 33D or 33X. Service to the Carnegie workshop is available via Port Authority routes 100 or 33X. Open since 2000, the West Busway is a five-mile exclusive fixed guideway for buses. Its six stations are located in Pittsburgh, Ingram, Crafton and Carnegie. West Busway services also extend along the Parkway West between Carnegie and Robinson Town Centre.
Transit-oriented development is a national land development trend that promotes compact, relatively dense development within walking distance of a transit station with a wide variety of uses. TOD incorporates both infill development and substantial new development on large parcels where available.
