Kane Glen Hazel Residents Support Their Pirates
It’s almost a rite of spring at Kane Glen Hazel as residents take in an early-season Pittsburgh Pirates game while enjoying the national pastime.
A group of Kane Glen Hazel’s Bucs fans attended an April 8 game at PNC Park. Even though the Pirates lost, the trip was well worth it.
“The residents have such a great time and they really enjoy supporting the hometown team,” said Kathi Lindsley, Therapeutic Recreation Manager at Kane Glen Hazel. “This is a tradition that everyone involved looks forward to each year.”
All four Kane Regional Centers participate in a program that enables residents at each center to attend six Pirates games during the season. The Kane Foundation covers expenses such as tickets and food at the games. Typically, five residents and their respective escorts attend each game, Lindsley said.
“At Glen Hazel, we chose six home games throughout this season,” Lindsley said. “This year it will be one afternoon game and five evening games. Residents from all the units are included in the games, so 30 residents go during the season. We buy hot dogs, peanuts, pop, wings and ice cream if the residents are permitted to eat that type of food.”
Lindsley said Kane Glen Hazel attempts to schedule trips to PNC Park on promotional giveaway nights so that residents may come home with a special souvenir from the Pirates game.
Kane Glen Hazel’s remaining games will be on May 7, July 23, August 6, August 20 and September 24.
“Residents reminisce about Forbes Field and the old stadium,” Lindsley said. “They like the new stadium because they get to sit among the fans instead of the previous handicapped section in Three Rivers Stadium. Overall, it’s an enjoyable experience.”
