Flowers, bingo and ice cream part of a special week at Kane Ross

Residents and staff at the John Kane Regional Center in Ross Township began National Nursing Home Week with a flurry of activities.

Kane Ross celebrated Mother’s Day with a social event on May 9. Keyboard player Marla Dean performed during the social.

“Marla Dean plays the electric keyboard and sings, including some of her own original songs,” said Dana Nicodemus, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor at Kane Ross. “Marla performs for us during light-up night in December and she is very popular among the residents and our staff. It was an uplifting performance.”

A “Good Neighbor Bingo” night was held on May 10, with residents and staff encouraged to wear black and gold in support of the Pittsburgh Penguins, who played the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup playoffs that night.

“Everyone was a winner even though our Pens finished on the wrong end of the scoreboard that night,” Nicodemus said. “The bingo and black-and-gold theme created camaraderie and was fun.”

An “Ice Cream Sundae Social” provided a tasty treat for those with a sweet tooth on May 11. The 1950s theme encouraged residents and staff to dress in the attire of the early Rock ‘n Roll era.

“Everyone enjoys ice cream,” Nicodemus said. “We added a little bit of Rock ‘n Roll to the event too.”

National Nursing Home Week spotlights nursing home residents and staff and encourages all to celebrate those that make a positive difference in their lives every day. A supportive and caring environment, such as a nursing home, provides enrichment for residents and families to continue growing, learning and teaching through various ways.

The week also provides an opportunity to honor all those who contribute to our nation’s nursing homes – residents, family members, employees and volunteers.
