The John Kane Regional Center in Glen Hazel commemorated National Nursing Home Week with a variety of activities.
Glen Hazel kicked off the week by honoring mothers throughout the facility on Mother’s Day. Each unit had a Mother’s Day tea party that featured tarts, pastries and live entertainment. The 4 Chorders, a barbershop quartet, strolled through two units, and Jim Flinner and his trio of musicians performed on the second floor.
Each female resident received a carnation corsage in the morning. Six Kane Glen Hazel residents still have living mothers, and those residents were presented with the traditional pink corsage. All other female residents received a white corsage.
“We wanted to recognize all the mothers for their hard work, dedication and love toward their families over the years,” said Kathi Lindsley, Therapeutic Recreation Manager at Kane Glen Hazel. “The tea party is a fun event and residents and staff alike enjoyed the quality time together. Presenting the corsages to the residents was a special touch that they really seemed to appreciate.”
On May 10, Glen Hazel presented its Equestrian Program in which handlers showed residents two horses and answered their questions about the animals.
“We had two horses available for the residents to see, pet and feed,” Lindsley said. “One handler was dressed in riding attire. Residents asked questions of the handlers and learned some interesting facts. We even learned that one of the horses likes to eat bananas.”
On May 11, a special bingo event was held for residents and the annual Volunteer Appreciation Program and luncheon was held. The following day, a staff cookout provided both lunch and dinner.
The week continued with residents having the opportunity to vote in the upcoming primary election via absentee ballots. A Health Fair was held in the Glen Hazel lobby throughout the day, and a special “Drive-in Movie” presentation of the hit motion picture “Avatar” was shown in the afternoon, as residents were treated to popcorn and root beer floats.
The week concluded with a car show that enabled residents and staff to see some high-powered vehicles.
Throughout the week Kane Glen Hazel collected non-perishable items in the lobby to send to our troops. Resident veterans helped coordinate the collection
“It’s been a busy, entertaining and enjoyable week for all those involved,” Lindsley said. “We put the needs of our residents first. It’s nice to see the residents participate in these special events. We always look forward to this week.”
National Nursing Home Week spotlights nursing home residents and staff and encourages all to celebrate those that make a positive difference in their lives every day. A supportive and caring environment, such as a nursing home, provides enrichment for residents and families to continue growing, learning and teaching through various ways. The week also provides an opportunity to honor all those who contribute to our nation’s nursing homes – residents, family members, employees and volunteers.
