There’s a new game in town at the John Kane Regional Center in Ross Township, and it’s based on an old tradition – the horseshoe toss.

For the first time, Kane Ross implemented a Horseshoe Challenge to coincide with the conclusion of National Nursing Home Week. The weather cooperated, enabling the horseshoe games to be played outdoors as part of a “Country Western Day” theme throughout the building on May 14.

Twenty-five residents participated on teams representing the second and third floors of the Kane Ross facility. Instead of the traditional metal horseshoes, Kane Ross used lighter, plastic horseshoes as a safer and easier to throw alternative.

“In addition to the 25 players, we had a nice audience cheering them on,” said Dana Nicodemus, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor at Kane Ross. “Both floors participated against each other in a friendly competition with the third floor prevailing as the champions.  The second floor has issued a rematch for sometime this summer. Both teams celebrated with cherry and orange popsicles.”

Nicodemus said events such as the Horseshoe Challenge are beneficial to the residents. In addition to providing exercise and a good time, the competition generated interest throughout the building and boosted morale.

“It was a success on multiple fronts,” Nicodemus said.
