The John Kane Regional Center in Scott Township recognized the hard work and dedication of more than 70 volunteers who have donated their time and efforts to brighten the lives of residents and staff.
The diverse group volunteers in attendance during the June 2 event had served Kane Scott and its predecessor, the original Kane Center, from one to 50 years. The longest-running volunteers at the event were Jane Slater, with 51 years, and Sandy Pizzuto.
“Some of our volunteers have provided their services at the ‘old’ Kane Hospital many years ago,” said Marci Donovan, Recreation Therapy Supervisor and Volunteer Coordinator at Kane Scott. “The theme of the luncheon was, ‘One Person Can Make a Difference.’ The room was decorated with Caribbean and Hawaiian themed items.
“Volunteers were asked to arrive in their vacation wear, so the room was very colorful,” she continued. “They were all given Hawaiian leis as they arrived. They were treated to Hawaiian music by Rosalie Martin, Recreation Therapist, and music for the luncheon was recorded Caribbean Steel drum music.”
Kane Scott Administrator Carolyn Pilewski officially welcomed the volunteers and thanked the group for its contributions.
“The spirit of volunteerism always has been present at Kane Scott,” Pilewski said. “Our volunteers are caring, giving people who are committed to improving the lives of others. We greatly appreciate all that our volunteers do for the residents. It’s only appropriate that we recognize our volunteers for their hard work.”
The Rev. Norm Lascher of the Pastoral Care Department provided the invocation. Resident Council President Kathleen Maedinger praised the volunteers and stressed how special their service is to the Kane community. Marty Taufer, second Resident Council President, also was in attendance.
“Special recognition needs to be given to many staff members who helped to prepare for the luncheon and served the volunteers,” Donovan said. “Aladdin food service supplied an executive chef for the day. Of course, we must thank all the volunteers for their many hours and years of service. All in all, it was a very special day.”
