As the month comes to an end, residents and staff at the John Kane Regional Center in Scott Township can reflect on one busy and memorable July.
Temperatures soared throughout the month, but that didn’t hinder a number of activities throughout the center.
“Each month there are a number of special events and activities planned here at Kane Scott, but July has been an especially exciting time for us,” said Marci Donovan, Kane Scott Recreation Therapy Supervisor. “There has been so much going on and our residents and staff just enjoy the variety of activities during the summer.”
Kane Scott held one of its popular hot dog roasts on July 2 and followed up at the month’s conclusion with a second roast set for July 30. The hot dog roasts are held in the courtyard, weather permitting.
Hot dogs might have been the main course, but there also was dessert during the Ice Cream Social on July 19. The Banjo All-Stars performed during the social. The Merry Music Makers also had a performance on July 14.
“Our residents have a chance to experience an old-fashioned cook out or an ice cream social, plus they get to hear some great musicians,” Donovan said. “That’s what summer is all about.”
Younger residents may participate in a monthly Dinner and a Movie Club. The movie club follows a monthly theme. July was pizza party month for movie watchers.
“The dinner and movie club is a young resident program, to meet the needs of the younger people here at Kane Scott,” Donovan said. “Fourteen percent of our census is people under the age of 65. This is a time for them to meet and socialize. The movie club is a hit with our younger residents. The monthly themes liven up the show.”
The summer months also have included visits to PNC Park for a Pirates game, a trip to the Pittsburgh Symphony at South Park, ice cream rides and a stop at Quaker Steak and Lube restaurant. CCAC students began their six-week courses in crafts and ceramics in the middle of the month and spent time with Kane Scott residents during the projects.
“There is a lot to do here at Kane Scott,” Donovan said. “Our goal is to improve our residents’ lives by keeping them active in enjoyable and rewarding activities.”
