August has been an entertaining and busy month at the John Kane Regional Center in Glen Hazel.

Kane Glen Hazel celebrated the life and musical legend of Elvis Presley during the week of Aug. 10 to 16. Glen Hazel residents remembered the “King of Rock ‘n Roll” through music, movies and trivia questions.

“We had Trivial Tuesday and asked residents to remember Elvis,” said Kathi Lindsley, Therapeutic Recreation Manager, at Kane Glen Hazel. “Residents were able to listen to a collection of Elvis’ music throughout the week. We watched some of his movies. Residents either seemed to love Elvis or could do without him.”

Five Kane Glen Hazel residents made a trip to St. Vincent College in Latrobe to attend the Pittsburgh Steelers’ NFL training camp on Aug. 18.

“The residents and their escorts and driver had beautiful weather for the trip,” Lindsley said. “Once there, we enjoyed a nice breeze under the old oak tree as we watched the team practice. After practice we were treated to an autograph session with the players to the delight of the residents.”

The day also included a stop for dinner at Wendy’s before the ride back to the center.

“We had a great time,” Lindsley said. “We certainly must give thanks to the Steeler organization, which permits and encourages Steelers fans to join them through camp for a great experience.”

On Friday the 13th, musician Charlie Apple returned for a performance on floors 3B and 4B. The show was entitled, “Fun Tyme with Charlie Apple.”

A day earlier, the annual 3B family picnic was held as every resident from the unit went outside for the event.

“We had an overcast day but that did not dampen our spirits although we did have to dodge a few raindrops,” Lindsley said. “The menu consisted of hotdogs and burgers with all the condiments, pasta salad, baked beans, watermelon wedges, lemonade and iced tea. We had chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies for dessert.  Approximately 12 different families also participated along with support staff. It was a positive experience that was made possible because of teamwork and commitment to quality care for our residents.”
