July 30 45th Birthday Party of the Passage of the Federal Medicare Act
State Senator Jim Ferlo will be hosting a birthday party celebration to honor the 45th anniversary of the passage of the landmark Federal Medicare Act by President Lydon B. Johnson. This critical social safety net program has been safeguarding healthcare for senior citizens for almost half a decade, and 95% of all senior citizens are currently receiving medicare benefits. The event will feature speakers, music, refreshments, and a cake-cutting ceremony with plenty of cake and ice cream for all. Co-sponsors include; The Western PA Coalition for Single Payer Healthcare; Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR), PA Alliance for Retired Americans; Independent State Store Union (ISSU); Just Harvest, and more.

17th Annual Firefighters Memorial and Muster
On the North Shore near Heinz Field
Admission is free! Fire truck show, vendors, bucket brigade contests, kids games, prizes, awards, and a chance for kids to squirt a hose and knock down a pretend fire are all part of the fun!
The event will feature fire-themed demonstrations, safety tips and attractions, including actual sprinkler demonstrations with live burns. The Western PA Firefighters Memorial Group has chosen this event to showcase its new $89,000 Mobile Fire Safety Training Unit.

Family fun activities, crafts and demos inside; activities & exhibits outside also.
International performance & installation artist Brandon Boan is helping secure artists, instructors & build activity stations.
Creation Stations
  • Recycled sculpture workshop: using recyclable materials to make figurative & formal art works.
  • Print workshop: families will focus on image making & collage utilizing silk screen printing processes on paper & T-shirts.
  • Claymation and puppet station: children will create story boards & form modeling clay to make their own animated short stories that will be on display at the event.
  • Wall art painting & crayon window films: a wall for endless expressions & creativity to share with everyone!
  • Balloon landscape: local artist will create an exciting outdoor installation using helium balloons.
