Dial 211, United Way’s helpline available 24/7 and ask to speak with a Hello Baby Family Specialist.

The Pennsylvania Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and vouchers (EBT card) for purchasing certain types of food for prenatal and post-partum women, infants, and children up to age 5.

Looking for assistance with becoming independent?

The Pennsylvania-Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) through the Department of Human Services (DHS) is dedicated to helping low-income families become independent while they receive TANF benefits. TANF is also referred to as cash assistance. The TANF program provides money to help:

  • Pregnant women
  • Dependent children and their parents who live with them
  • Dependent children and other relatives who live with them and care for them

Pennsylvania’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is Pennsylvania’s program to provide health coverage to uninsured children and teens who are not eligible for or enrolled in Medical Assistance.

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a partially refundable credit that allows low- and moderate-income families to reduce their tax liability dollar-for-dollar by up to $2,000 for each qualifying child. The credit phases out depending on the modified adjusted gross income amounts for single filers or joint filers.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) helps low- to moderate-income workers and families get a tax break. If you qualify, you can use the credit to reduce the taxes you owe – and maybe increase your refund.

The Allegheny Link Home Visiting Program can connect you to the supports you need to support a healthy pregnancy, promote child development, and prepare young children for school. For more information contact the Allegheny Link by email or phone at 1-866-730-2368.

Healthy Start aims to improve maternal and child health and to reduce poor birth outcomes and infant mortality in Allegheny County.

Some supports are only available to specific individuals. If you’re a young or older adult, a veteran, an immigrant or identify as LGBTQIA+, look for these lightbulbs throughout the site.

SHIM South Hills Family Center
Free to all families living in Prospect Park, focusing primarily on families with children ages 0 – 5 years, and is located in a community where the majority of participating families are immigrants. Services include home visits, child development screenings, group activities, and referrals to families in need.

The Allegheny Health Network – Center for Inclusion Health Doula Program
Birth doula services at no cost to immigrant/refugee families in Allegheny County. The team consists of trained doulas who speak English, Spanish, Nepali, and Arabic, but interpretation is available for other languages. Services are provided at no cost regardless of immigration status, insurance, or birthing location.
