Kosher Food Needs

The Squirrel Hill Community Food Pantry provides both non-kosher and kosher food to the residents of Squirrel Hill (15217). As the only food pantry in southwestern Pa. committed to meeting the needs of those who keep kosher homes, the pantry also serves those outside the 15217 ZIP code area who qualify for food assistance and require kosher food.

Meals for Older Adults 

Persons 60 years of age and older, and those who are unable to prepare meals or shop for themselves, can get assistance with meals.

Farmer’s Market Vouchers

Provides older adult residents of Allegheny County who are income eligible $20 in vouchers to purchase fresh produce from many of the farmer’s markets located in the county during the summer and autumn months. The supply of vouchers is limited. Photo identification for proof of age and residency is required. The voucher distribution date, usually in late June, is announced in the media and on the DHS website.

Free Food for Seniors

Provides a monthly food allotment to older adults who qualify based on income. Monthly assortment includes canned vegetables, fruit, juices, peanut butter, cheese, canned chicken, evaporated milk, pasta and cereal. Photo identification and proof of income is required.

Home Delivered Meals
Delivers nutritious, balanced meals, Monday through Friday to older adults who have difficulty in cooking or leaving their home.

Lunch at Senior Centers 
Provides lunch and social time Monday through Friday in every senior community center. Specially prepared meals are available for individuals with a dietary prescription. Meals are designed to meet one-third of the older adult’s daily nutritional requirements. Menus and a list and interactive map of Senior Community Center locations 

  Out-of-school Feeding Programs 

Provides meals to children during out-of-school hours, including before school, after school, evenings, weekends and summers.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as Food Stamps) 

SNAP benefits are used to buy food and help low-income households maintain more nutritious diets by increasing the food purchasing power for all eligible participants.  SNAP benefits are provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.

Apply online at COMPASS or by visiting one of the Allegheny County Assistance Offices.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC)

The WIC Program is a health and supplemental nutrition program for pregnant women; breastfeeding women up to 12 months postpartum; non-breastfeeding women up to six months post-partum; infants and children up to five years of age who have a medical/nutritional risk and meet financial eligibility criteria.  WIC is provided by the Allegheny County Health Department.

Emergency Food Assistance Programs
Distributes government surplus and purchased food commodities to food pantries.
