Food Assistance Options for Low-income Families


You can get nutritious food through several programs. 

Your household income must be low enough to qualify for some of the programs below. 

Compare your household income to the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines (FPIG) to see if you qualify for these programs. Or, call the number listed for the program.

SNAP (Food Stamps) Recipients

You can apply online at COMPASS or by visiting one of the Allegheny County Assistance Offices.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) - Pa. Department of Human Services

  • If you are pregnant
  • If you are breastfeeding and your baby is less than one year old 
  • If you are not breastfeeding and your baby is under six months old 
  • Infants and children up to five years of age who have a medical/nutritional risk 
  • For households with incomes at or below 185% of FPIG.

Senior Box Program - Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

You can supplement your own fresh food with an assortment of shelf-stable foods: canned vegetables, fruit and juice, protein, pasta and cereal. Call the number above to find out which participating food pantry is right for you. Photo identification and proof of income is required.

Senior Center Lunches 
  • Many senior centers serve lunch mid-day, Monday through Friday. 
  • Meals are nutritious and may be adjusted for specialized diets.
