Allegheny County Health Department Earns Reaccreditation from National Public Health Board

PITTSBURGH – Today we celebrate International Nurses Day which was created to pay honor and tribute to all of the nurses around the world and the incredible work they do. To further showcase our ongoing commitment to the public health of our community, the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) proudly announces it has once again earned national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB), affirming its ongoing commitment to quality, transparency, and excellence in serving the public. This reaccreditation extends ACHD’s status for another five years and underscores the department’s ability to continuously improve, evolve, and deliver on its mission to protect and promote the health of all Allegheny County residents.

“Maintaining national accreditation is more than a badge of honor—it’s a reflection of our values and our unwavering commitment to the community we serve,” said Dr. Iulia Vann, Director of the Allegheny County Health Department. “We’re proud to meet and exceed national public health standards, and we hope this reaccreditation reinforces public trust in the programs and services we deliver every day.”

PHAB’s rigorous accreditation process measures health departments against a set of nationally recognized, evidence-based standards. It encourages continuous improvement, innovative thinking, and a strong infrastructure capable of addressing evolving public health needs. Funded in part by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, PHAB’s mission is to advance the quality and performance of public health systems across the country.

Since achieving initial accreditation, ACHD has strengthened its programs in environmental health, maternal and child health, chronic disease prevention, and emergency preparedness. The department has also deepened its collaboration with community-based organizations to address disparities in health outcomes, especially in historically underserved neighborhoods.

"Reaccreditation shows that this isn’t just a one-time achievement,” said Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, President and CEO of PHAB. “Allegheny County Health Department has demonstrated an enduring commitment to accountability, continuous quality improvement, and the health of its community. This kind of leadership is vital in today’s public health landscape.”

With more than 1.2 million residents, Allegheny County faces a wide array of public health challenges—from rising rates of chronic disease to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, opioid use, and environmental health concerns. ACHD continues to use data, community engagement, and evidence-based practices to develop solutions that are both locally responsive and nationally informed.

“Our work isn’t done—it’s evolving,” Dr. Vann added. “This reaccreditation energizes us to keep innovating, keep collaborating, and keep striving for a healthier, more equitable future for everyone in Allegheny County.”
