ACJ Kicks Off Correctional Employees Week

Published on May 04, 2026

Decorations and doughnuts greeted employees on Monday.

In 1984, then-President Ronald Reagan proclaimed the first full week of May as National Correctional Officers Week.

At that time, Reagan acknowledged that correctional professionals deserve praise for their “courage, dedication and professionalism.” The Allegheny County Jail is celebrating the efforts of its dedicated staff during the facility’s annual Correctional Employees Week celebration this week.

Warden Trevor Wingard said the celebration is much deserved.

“Those who work in corrections do not get the recognition they deserve (and they) never have,” Wingard said. “The employees at the Allegheny County Jail make a difference every day. They provide security for the local community and are helping change the lives the people under their supervision.”

The Rev. Dr. Tami Hooker, chaplain for ACJ staff, said she knows that correctional employees may feel invisible and that the public doesn’t understand or appreciate what they do.

Hooker said she understands and agrees with their feelings.

But she said she also understands two other things:

“The first is that those who are aware of the work they do are impressed by it and greatly appreciate it.”

The second, she said, is those who aren’t aware nevertheless receive the benefits of their work.

“Because correctional employees are willing to do this difficult work, the community is safer,” Hooker said. “It’s safer for having those who aren’t ready to be in society to be held in a safe place.”

Their efforts also create a safer workplace for those whose job is to help ACJ residents return to the community better than they were when they arrived, she said.

As the celebration kicks into high gear, Wingard said having a special week to thank those who choose to work in corrections is nice but isn’t enough.

“We are thankful for the week of recognition,” Wingard said, “but these employees deserve recognition every day for what they do.”

This year’s celebration includes prize giveaways, themed meals, the 30th Annual ACJ Memorial Service, and concludes with a cookout.
