ACJ Holds Memorial Service as Part of Correctional Employees Week

Published on May 07, 2025

The Allegheny County Jail celebrated 2025 Correctional Employees Week from May 4-10.

In addition to daily raffles and special meals in the Officer Dining room, the week includes special events like Wednesday’s Annual Memorial Service that pays homage to those correctional employees who have gone before us and passed away.

President Ronald Reagan proclaimed National Correctional Officers Week in 1984 to honor and recognize officers who work behind the walls of carceral facilities. In 1996, Congress expanded the week to include all correctional employees, including healthcare, administration, re-entry and many other disciplines.

And speaking of healthcare: Tuesday marked National Nurses Day, and National Nurses Week ran from May 6-12. ACJ nurses play a critical role on the front lines of healthcare inside the facility and are integral to the success of individuals housed here.
