As the temperature touched 95 degrees at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, the Second Avenue sidewalk outside of the Allegheny County Jail was filled with tents, tables and people as a “popup” resource fair was in full swing.

Despite the heat, many visitors stopped by the numerous booths to learn about the multiple resources available in Allegheny County,

“I’ve had more people stop than ever before,” said Melissa Brackenridge, Director of Pathway to Care and Recovery, as she manned the organization’s booth.

Located at 326 Third Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pathway to Care and Recovery is a crisis center that offers substance use recovery services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The resource fair, said Connie Clark, ACJ Deputy Warden for Programs and Services, is an opportunity for community partners who provide substance use support to provide information on their services to families coming into the jail, individuals being released from the jail, and jail program and medical staff.

“It’s amazing,” said Brackenridge, referring to the jail administration’s effort to provide an opportunity for representatives of these organizations to meet people who could need support services face to face.

Numerous other organizations, such as the Passages to Recovery, John’s Echo and Allegheny County Department of Human Services were on hand to provide information about their services.

ACJ partners with the Allegheny County Health Department to offer resource fairs at different points throughout the year.
