As Allegheny County Jail Warden Trevor Wingard rose to speak at Nov. 21’s Cadet Graduation, he noted the present “Good News, Bad News” situation that had arisen.

“The good news is that this is the most people we’ve ever had at a graduation,” he told the overflow crowd inside the Contact Visits Room.

“The bad news is that we ran out of chairs,” he quipped, eliciting laughs from the standing-room only crowd on hand to witness 19 cadets graduate and seven correctional officers earn promotions to sergeant.

Magisterial District Judge James Hanley reprised his role by administering the oath and County Manager John Fournier addressed the new officers in his first official visit to the facility.  Chief Deputy Warden Lee Estock and Wingard followed Fournier with congratulations and offered challenges to the newest officers.

“Don’t take (your authority) lightly,” Wingard said. “Use it to start changing lives.”

The newly sworn-in officers received their badges and certificates, and officer Bishal Sherpa presented training sergeant Randy Justice with the class plaque.

Seven current COs were also promoted to the rank of sergeant as part of the event. Those new sergeants each received new badges and certificates before everyone in attendance enjoyed a sandwich buffet luncheon.
