Six Cadets Sworn in as Correctional Officers

Family, friends, Allegheny County administrators and Jail leadership and staff gathered on Sept. 11 to welcome ACJ’s newest correctional officers to the facility.
Six men received their badges and some emphatic words of advice during the graduation ceremony.
“Congratulations,” said Allegheny County Manager John Fournier who was invited to speak to the class. “You have joined a noble calling.”
Fournier told the soon to be officers that they will be meeting people who are experiencing the “worst day” of their lives.
Providing safety and security are the most important aspects of the job, Fournier said. And those duties extend to all, including those living in Allegheny County, working at the ACJ and residing in the jail.
The class, said ACJ Chief Deputy Warden Lee Estock, represents the future of corrections.
Estock said the newest officers should feel a great sense of pride in their accomplishments, but he reminded them that a great deal of responsibility comes with that pride.
“Who you are and what you do when no one is watching is just as important as what you do when everyone is watching,” Estock said.
Graduate Jason Bean gave the class speech and provided the class plaque to Sgt. Randy Justice who led the group through training.
“One thing we have learned is being a correctional officer is not just a job, but a career, and it’s an important one,” said Bean. “Not only for ourselves and the community, but for the men, women and children whose care we are entrusted.”
