County Breaks Ground for New Accessible Trail at Settlers Cabin Park

Published on October 07, 2024

PITTSBURGH – Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, alongside County Council President Pat Catena and the Allegheny County Parks Department, today celebrated the groundbreaking of a new accessible pedestrian trail at Settlers Cabin Park.

The proposed trail will be an ADA-accessible, paved route that follows Papoose and TePee Drives.  The trail will be 8 feet wide and nearly one mile long, starting near Moccasin Shelter and ending near Iroquois shelter.  Park users will be able to enjoy a dedicated pedestrian corridor through the heart of the park and no longer need to share the road with vehicular traffic.

The project will feature green infrastructure such as rain gardens and bioswales to manage stormwater runoff, landscape features such as boulder retaining walls and native plant meadows, and a variety of new seating opportunities.

“This new trail is part of our broader commitment to making our parks safer and more accessible for all visitors,” said County Executive Innamorato. “By creating dedicated pathways, we’re ensuring that everyone—regardless of mobility—can enjoy the beauty of Settlers Cabin Park in a safe and secure way.”

The trail is designed with accessibility in mind, offering a smoother, safer path for park visitors with mobility needs. The project is expected to greatly improve pedestrian safety throughout the park.

“Having a dedicated pedestrian path here is a significant safety improvement for park visitors, especially those with accessibility challenges,” added County Council President Pat Catena. “I’m proud to see this project move forward and look forward to the positive impact it will have on the community.”

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
