Small Section of Sesqui Drive next to Black and Gold Playground to be closed April 25-26

PITTSBURGH – The Department of Public Works announced today that the Black and Gold Playground parking lot near the intersection of Corrigan Drive and Sesqui Drive in South Park will close at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024. The closure, which is expected to end next month, is required for paving, line painting, as well as seeding and planting.

As part of the same project, a small section of Sesqui Drive next to the Black and Gold Playground parking lot will be closed from 7 a.m. Thursday, April 25 to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 26. There will be no posted detour. Drivers will be able reach the South Park Game Preserve and the shelters along Sesqui Drive using Corrigan Drive and McConkey Road.

The Black and Gold Playground will remain open during construction. Visitors to the playground are encouraged to park in the parking lot along Corrigan Drive and opposite the Allegheny County horse stables or in the permeable parking lot along Corrigan Drive and adjacent to the South Park Fairgrounds.

Work on the Black and Gold Playground parking lot began on August 24, 2023. The project was shut down from December through March due to the remaining work requiring warm conditions. Last year’s work included milling, storm sewer improvements, and installation of three rain gardens.

The project is being done by Morgan Excavating, LP of Speers Borough, PA, as part of a $1.8 million contract that also includes work on another parking lot and a storm sewer replacement in South Park.
