Upcoming I-279, HOV Closures for Jacks Run Bridge Project Announced

Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 in Ross

PITTSBURGH – The Department of Public Works announced today the schedule from tonight through the morning of Saturday, August 22 for closures of a portion of I-279 and the I-279/I-579 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes in Pittsburgh, Ross, and Ohio Township. The closures are necessary to demolish Jacks Run Bridge No. 3, which carries Jacks Run Road over I-279 between Bellevue Road/Bellpark Drive and Kane Lane in Ross.

Tonight (August 14) to tomorrow morning (August 15)

  • The right lane of I-279 northbound (outbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from two hours after the 6:40 pm Pittsburgh Pirates game concludes (or 7 pm if the game is postponed) until 6 am.

  • A single lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 6 am.

  • The I-279 northbound (outbound) on-ramp from Cemetery Lane closed from two hours after the Pirates game concludes (or 7 pm if the game is postponed) until 6 am.

Tomorrow night (August 15) to Sunday morning (August 16)

  • I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 7:15 pm Pirates game concludes (or 9 pm if the game is postponed) until 9 am.

  • The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Pirates game concludes (or 9 pm if the game is postponed) until 10 am.

Sunday night (August 16) to Monday morning (August 17)

  • I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from 9 pm to 5 am.

  • The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from 8 pm to 6 am.

  • The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 6 am.

Monday night (August 17) to Tuesday morning (August 18)

  • I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 7:05 pm Pirates game concludes (or 9 pm if the game is postponed) until 5 am.

  • The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Pirates game concludes (or 9 pm if the game is postponed) until 6 am.

  • The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 6 am.

Tuesday night (August 18) to Wednesday morning (August 19)

  • I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 6:40 pm Pirates game concludes (or 9 pm if the game is postponed) until 5 am.

  • The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Pirates game concludes (or 9 pm if the game is postponed) until 6 am.

  • The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 6 am.

Wednesday night (August 19) to Thursday morning (August 20)

  • I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from 9 pm to 5 am.

  • The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from 8 pm to 6 am.

  • The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 6 am.

Thursday night (August 20) to Friday morning (August 21)

  • I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from 9 pm to 5 am.

  • The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from 8 pm to 6 am.

  • The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 6 am.

Friday night (August 21) to Saturday morning (August 22)

  • I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 7 pm Pittsburgh Steelers game concludes until 9 am.

  • The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Steelers game concludes until 10 am.

  • The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 9 am.

This schedule is weather-dependent. Demolition work cannot take place during heavy rainfall or when lightning is in the area.

When I-279 northbound (outbound) is fully closed:

  • I-279 northbound traffic will be detoured back to I-279 using McKnight Road, Babcock Boulevard, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road, and Camp Horne Road.

  • Union Avenue traffic to I-279 northbound will be detoured using Gass Road, Highland Avenue, Perry Highway, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road, and Camp Horne Road.

  • Cemetery Lane traffic to I-279 northbound will be detoured using Perry Highway, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road, and Camp Horne Road.

When the I-279 North on-ramp from Cemetery Lane is closed, traffic will be detoured using Perry Highway, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road, and Camp Horne Road.

I-279 and the I-279/I-579 HOV lanes are maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The section of I-279 near Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 is used by an average of 73,367 vehicles daily.

Swank Construction Company of New Kensington is the primary construction contractor for the $2.8 million project, which began on April 27, 2026. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is funding the entire project, and PennDOT is overseeing the federal funds.

Public Works closed Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 on July 3, 2025, after inspectors identified corrosion in the bridge’s only pier. The bridge carried an average of 4,631 vehicles daily. Construction of a new bridge will take place as a separate project that is expected to begin next year.
