Single-Lane I-279 Closures to Continue Until End of Project

PITTSBURGH – The Department of Public Works announced today that after full closures of I‑279 northbound and the I‑279/I‑579 High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes tonight, Monday night, and Tuesday night, there will be no additional full closures as part of the Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 demolition project. Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 carries Jacks Run Road over I-279 between Bellevue Road/Bellpark Drive and Kane Lane in Ross.

The upcoming project schedule is as follows:

Tonight (August 21) to tomorrow morning (August 22)

I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from two hours after the 7 pm Pittsburgh Steelers game concludes until 9 am.
The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from two hours after the Steelers game concludes until 10 am.
The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 9 am.

Monday night (August 24) to Tuesday morning (August 25)

I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from 9 pm to 5 am.
The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from 8 pm to 6 am.
The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 6 am.

Tuesday night (August 25) to Wednesday morning (August 26)

I-279 northbound (outbound) will be fully closed between the McKnight Road/Evergreen Road exit ramp (Exit 4) and the I-279 North on-ramp from Camp Horne Road from 9 pm to 5 am.
The I-279/I-579 HOV northbound (outbound) lanes will be closed from 8 pm to 6 am.
The left lane of I-279 southbound (inbound) under Jacks Run Road will be closed from 7 pm to 6 am.

Following the full closures on Tuesday night, the right lane of I-279 northbound and the left lane of I-279 southbound beneath the bridge will be closed between 7 pm and 6 am on weekdays and 7 pm and 9 am on weekends until the project ends next month. When there is a Pittsburgh Pirates home game, the single-lane closures will start two hours after the game ends.

When the right lane of I-279 northbound is closed, the I-279 northbound on-ramp from Cemetery Lane will also be closed. Traffic will be detoured using Perry Highway, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road, and Camp Horne Road.

When I-279 northbound (outbound) is fully closed:

I-279 northbound traffic will be detoured back to I-279 using McKnight Road, Babcock Boulevard, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road, and Camp Horne Road.
Union Avenue traffic to I-279 northbound will be detoured using Gass Road, Highland Avenue, Perry Highway, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road, and Camp Horne Road.
Cemetery Lane traffic to I-279 northbound will be detoured using Perry Highway, Rochester Road, Lowries Run Road, and Camp Horne Road.

Public Works closed Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 on July 3, 2025; demolition of the bridge began on April 27, 2026; and full closures of I‑279 or the I‑279/I‑579 HOV lanes began on June 15, 2026. Remaining work during the demolition project includes continued removal of the bridge’s pier, retaining wall repairs, and site cleanup.

Swank Construction Company of New Kensington is the primary construction contractor for the $2.8 million project. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is funding the entire project, and PennDOT is overseeing the federal funds.

I-279 and the I-279/I-579 HOV lanes are maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). The section of I-279 near Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 is used by an average of 73,367 vehicles daily.

Prior to its closing, Jacks Run Bridge No. 3 carried an average of 4,631 vehicles daily. Construction of a new bridge will take place as a separate project that is expected to begin next year.
