Extreme Heat Warning in Effect for Allegheny County

Published on June 23, 2025

(PITTSBURGH) The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Allegheny County, in effect now through Wednesday, June 25 at 8:00 PM. Daytime high temperatures will reach the low to mid-90s, with heat index values between 100°F and 105°F.

In addition, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued an Air Quality Action Day for Monday, June 23. The combination of high temperatures, sunshine, and stagnant air will lead to ozone levels in the Code Orange range, meaning air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including older adults, children, and people with respiratory issues. Conditions on Tuesday are expected to be similar and may result in continued air quality concerns.

Heat and Air Quality Safety Tips:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages.

  • Limit outdoor activity, especially between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas if you must be outside.

  • Use air conditioning or spend time in public spaces such as libraries, malls, or community centers if your home is not air-conditioned.

  • Keep phones and other devices charged in case of power outages due to heat-related strain on the power grid.

  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a short period of time. Temperatures inside cars can rise rapidly and become deadly.

  • Check on vulnerable individuals, including older adults, young children, and those with chronic health conditions.

  • Follow medical advice if you have asthma, COPD, or other respiratory conditions. Reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.

Cooling Centers:

Cooling centers are available across Allegheny County to provide relief from extreme heat. For a list of open locations and hours, visit County Cooling Centers. If more centers become available, this list will be updated.
