(PITTSBURGH) - County Police have filed charges against a former corrections officer at the Allegheny County Jail. On January 3, 2024, Allegheny County Police were alerted to an unplanned use of force event that occurred inside the Allegheny County Jail. It was determined the incident took place while officers were conducting window checks of cells on Level 6 of the jail, and involved an incarcerated male individual and multiple male corrections officers.
Investigators reviewed surveillance video showing the incident and observed the incarcerated individual and a corrections officer, identified as 49-year-old Robert Veith of Plum, engaged in a conversation. During that conversation, Veith is seen reaching out towards the individual and striking him with his fist multiple times. A responding supervisor deployed a taser on the individual, and Veith is seen continuing to strike the individual after he had fallen to the ground.
After consultation with the district attorney’s office, County Police have filed charges via summons against Veith to include harassment, official oppression, and simple assault. Veith is no longer an employee of the Allegheny County Jail.
Media inquiries for the Allegheny County Police Department should be sent to ACPDMedia@AlleghenyCounty.us and the appropriate command staff will respond when able.
