World TB Day: Allegheny County Health Department and Breathe PA Urge Prevention and Testing as Tuberculosis Cases Rise Nationwide

PITTSBURGH – In recognition of World TB Day on Tuesday, March 24, the Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) and Breathe PA are raising awareness about tuberculosis (TB) prevention, testing, and treatment resources available to residents across the region.

TB is a highly contagious bacterial respiratory infection that primarily affects the lungs. However, it can also target other parts of the body, including the brain, kidneys, and spine. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), TB cases have been on the rise since 2021. In 2024, the United States had 10,388 cases of TB, an 8% increase from the year before.

The ACHD Pulmonary Center, located in downtown Pittsburgh, provides comprehensive TB services, including screening, evaluation, and treatment. These services include tuberculin skin testing, diagnostic evaluation, and directly observed therapy (DOT) to ensure patients complete their treatment safely and effectively. Breathe PA proudly supports ACHD by offering nutritional aid to patients on the day of testing and a resource box for patients undergoing treatment. Breathe PA also provides transportation support through bus passes and parking validation for those utilizing the clinic's services.

“World TB Day is a reminder that tuberculosis is still present in our communities, but it is also preventable and curable,” said Dr. Iulia Vann, Director of the Allegheny County Health Department. “At ACHD, we are committed to ensuring that every resident has access to timely testing, effective treatment, and the support needed to complete care. By working together with community partners like Breathe PA, we can eliminate barriers and move closer to ending TB in Allegheny County.”

Tuberculosis remains a serious but preventable and treatable infectious disease. Public health officials emphasize that early detection and treatment are essential to stopping its spread and protecting community health.

“On World TB Day, we are reminded that tuberculosis remains a public health priority in our communities,” said Casey Monroe, Executive Director of Breathe PA. “Today, we are proud to partner with ACHD to support prevention, testing, and education. This work is deeply rooted in our history. Founded in 1904 in response to the tuberculosis epidemic, Breathe PA has remained committed to protecting lung health for more than 120 years.”

Three Facts About TB:

  1. From a cough to a laugh - TB spreads through the air
  2. Not everyone infected with TB becomes sick, but treatment is essential to prevent transmission.
  3. Testing and treatment are available locally and can prevent serious illness.

Health officials encourage residents, especially those who may be at higher risk or who require testing for employment or school, to take advantage of available TB screening services. Routine screenings are available by appointment through the ACHD Pulmonary Center.
