PITTSBURGH – County Executive released the following statement after the Allegheny County Board of Health unanimously voted to move a countywide Paid Parental Leave policy to public comment: “When I introduced ‘Forward with Families,’ it was a commitment to make real, coordinated investments that meet families where they are and remove barriers to opportunity. I want to make Allegheny County the best place to raise a family possible and Paid Parental Leave is a critical piece of that effort. A lack of paid leave keeps workers on the sidelines, slows the economy, and holds us back as a region.
And we know lack of Paid Parental Leave isn’t just an economic problem. It is a public health crisis. Lack of Paid Parental Leave puts parents and babies at risk for negative health outcomes and forces people back to work before they’re ready. By introducing Paid Parental Leave for public comment, today the Health Department and Board of Health showed that we can boldly lead with our values and prioritize the wellbeing of mothers, families, and babies.
I’m sure we’ll get lots of comments from people with different perspectives and priorities, and we welcome the feedback. But I want to be clear that my Administration is never going to stop fighting for mothers, babies, families and workers. It is always the right time to do the right thing and now is the right time to bring Paid Parental Leave to Allegheny County.”
