PITTSBURGH – This afternoon that Allegheny County Board of Health unanimously passed the revised Paid Parental Leave legislation that was introduced at the September 16 Board of Health meeting.
County Executive Innamorato applauded the Board of Health’s vote, saying: “I want to thank the Board of Health for taking this bold step towards a healthier Allegheny County for all. The science is clear: paid parental leave is a public health necessity for people who give birth, infants, and all new parents so they have the time to bond and heal in the critical earliest stages of a baby’s life.”
The County Executive continued: “This legislation will now go to County Council for their consideration and I urge them to move quickly. The Health Department received record amounts of feedback from the community supporting paid parental leave. The Health Department also heard feedback about how the bill could be strengthened and improved, and implemented several revisions to make it achievable in Allegheny County. We’ve been waiting for decades for federal or state action, while the rest of the world and much of the country moves forward with protecting families. I’m tired of waiting, and Allegheny County families are tired of waiting. They deserve better and I eagerly encourage Council to pass this bill and send it to me for my signature.”
