Inspired by the annual NCAA basketball tournament, the Allegheny County Jail held its own version of March Madness for the first time this year.

Foundation of HOPE staff and Maj. Jack Vanchieri spearheaded the event, which saw incarcerated individuals compete in free throw shooting contests. Each pod held its own competition with individuals shooting 25 foul shots each. Pod winners squared off against other winners from their housing level, and the level winners competed for the championship on Friday, March 27 inside the Level 4 gym.

"We have had such a wonderful time encouraging residents to compete, passing out prize candy, and creating a positive space for residents to be able to participate in something bigger than themselves," said Tre' Thomas, HOPE's Activities-Based Program Director. "A resident's stay can be incredibly isolating time for them, so I was smiling ear-to-ear seeing residents encourage each other to participate, give each other shooting tips, and celebrate their pod and level victors."

Organizers hope to make the contest an annual event at the jail.
