Davis Inspires HOPE Participants at Graduation

Live music has been a staple at Foundation of HOPE graduations in recent months.
As guests and graduates assembled for the most recent ceremony on Sept. 10, they were treated to the sound of an electric guitar.
The 14 graduates and various jail and Foundation of HOPE staff heard one of the program participants perform an original piece called “Memories” that he composed while incarcerated at a different institution. It was a unique departure from previous recent HOPE graduations that featured violin performances from Devin Arrington.
Following the performance, two other program participants addressed the group and encouraged fellow graduates to utilize their available resources when they are released.
That message segued well when featured speaker Lee Davis followed. Davis is a formerly incarcerated individual-turned-entrepreneur and HOPE board member who spoke about his background and engaged with the graduates about their potential business opportunities and ideas for when they get out. Like the incarcerated speakers, Davis urged them to take advantage of their available resources.
“Don’t let your circumstances determine what you’re going to do when you get out,” Davis said.
Graduates received their certificates of completion, and either a Bible or journal before enjoying special snacks at the conclusion of the ceremony. They then had the chance to meet Davis and other HOPE staff members.
About the Foundation of HOPE
The Foundation of HOPE is an interfaith nonprofit organization that provides Chaplaincy and Pre-Release programs at Allegheny County Jail.
The HOPE Pre-Release program is a vital part of the ACJ’s goal to give incarcerated individuals the tools they need to improve their lives in positive ways when they are released. Participants live together on the HOPE pod and take part in 60 hours of evidence-based classes. After graduating, they can remain on the pod as group leaders and mentors, while taking graduate-level classes.
The Foundation of HOPE Pre-Release program graduated 482 participants in 2024.
