County Exec Announces Shuman Advisory Board

COUNTY EXECUTIVE INNAMORATO ANNOUNCES ADVISORY BOARD IN ADVANCE OF THE REOPENING OF SHUMAN JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER

Today, County Executive Sara Innamorato announced that she is reestablishing the 10-member Juvenile Detention Board of Advisors in anticipation of the reopening of the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center in the coming weeks. An existing State statute grants the authority for the County to appoint such a committee of 10 members that provide professional expertise to ensure the facility operates safely and in the best interest of the young people who are detained at Shuman. The first phase of the new Shuman facility is anticipated to open in the coming weeks with 12 beds.

“These appointments are the first step in ensuring that that the new Shuman Center is supporting young people and setting them up to successfully reintegrate with their communities. Our goal with the new Shuman is to provide excellent staff and holistic services including mental health supports, workforce development, and educational opportunities to allow for the young people go on to reach their full potential. Providing expertise and community input on the operations of Shuman are an important step to fulfilling that goal,” said County Executive Sara Innamorato.

County Executive Innamorato announced five appointments, which were submitted to County Council for approval.

  • The Honorable Judge Tiffany E. Sizemore, Allegheny Court of Common Pleas
  • Dr. Kathi Elliott, Chief Executive Officer, Gwen’s Girls
  • Richard Garland, Executive Director, Reimagine Reentry
  • Kristy Trautmann, Executive Director, FISA Foundation
  • Mica Williams, Senior Program Manager, TASC’s Center for Health and Justice

Additionally, President Judge Susan J. Evashavik has selected the following individuals to fill the required three appointments on the Board of Advisors.

  • The Honorable Judge Jennifer S. McCrady, Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas
  • Dr. Edward Mulvey, Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus and Former Director of the Law and Psychiatry Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
  • Cheyenne Tyler, Executive Director, Café Momentum

The two remaining seats of the 10-person board will be filled by County Executive Sara Innamorato and Controller Corey O’Connor or a designee per state statute.

Controller Corey O’Connor said: "An engaged and responsible Board of Advisors will be essential to reopening a safe youth detention facility in the county, and I thank County Executive Innamorato for her action on putting such a board in place. I look forward to participating in its important work alongside my own office’s role in monitoring the facility renovation and provider contract."
