PITTSBURGH – Allegheny County is hosting a free, all-ages birthday bash on the Andy Warhol Bridge to celebrate its 100th birthday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 27. The bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

The Bridge Birthday Bash, which will be emceed by City Cast Pittsburgh host Megan Harris, will feature contests and games with prizes, performances, art activities, as well as food and drink vendors.

The contests and games will take place on stage every half hour, including bridge building (with toothpicks and marshmallows) to Campbell’s Soup can stacking. There will also be a costume contest, where folks are encouraged to come in a costume that celebrates bridges, Andy Warhol, or any combination of the two that embodies the spirit of the event.

Performer Dixie Surewood will lead the crowd in singing happy birthday to the bridge and blow out the candles on an Andy Warhol themed-birthday cake, and Pittsburgh’s Poetess Rachel Ann Bovier will read one of her poems.

“As the entire nation celebrates our collective 250th birthday, we’re celebrating a unique part of Allegheny County’s history with the 100th birthday of our Andy Warhol Bridge. Allegheny County’s history is filled with innovation and creativity, beautiful architecture, and talented homegrown artists, and the Andy Warhol Bridge encapsulates all of that in one iconic structure,” said Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato. “Thank you to all of the sponsors and event partners who have agreed to be a part of a very special day on June 27.”

"It's a true point of pride for The Warhol that the city of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County have embraced Andy Warhol so fully,” said Mario Rossero, Director of The Warhol. “In addition to linking downtown to the North Shore, the Warhol Bridge also serves as a symbol of connection and celebration for the life of this native Pittsburgh artist and Pop Art rebel."

Several free community art activities are planned, including:

  • The Andy Warhol Museum leading acetate collages
  • The Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh leading a community mural
  • The Greater Pittsburgh YMCA leading tie dye
  • Local artist Mary Temonte will have a screen print station. Allegheny County will provide a few hundred free note cards and bandanas, but we recommend you bring something you want to have screen printed. For example, bring a T-shirt or tote bag, and Mary will screen print the Andy Warhol Bridge onto them.
  • Artists who want to take advantage of the bridge being closed to traffic will have space to set up an easel or sketch pad to paint or draw for the duration of the event. Artist and instructor Nicholas Ruble will be on site to give tips to painters who want some feedback on their work.
  • Face painting and temporary tattoos, on-demand poems, and photo booths will also be available.

Local artist strawberryluna designed a limited-edition commemorative poster to celebrate the centennial. The poster will be for sale at the Bridge Birthday Bash and will be available in local retail shops, including the Heinz History Center and The Warhol Museum gift shops as well as at Riverstone Books and love, Pittsburgh.

In 1925, Allegheny County awarded a $2.5 million contract to the American Bridge Company to build what are now called the Roberto Clemente, Andy Warhol, and Rachel Carson Bridges – known locally as the Sister Bridges. They are the only three identically designed self-anchored suspension bridges in the world and were built between 1926 and 1928.

The Andy Warhol Bridge, which was called the Seventh Street Bridge until 2005, is the oldest of the three spans and is celebrating its 100th birthday this month. The Rachel Carson Bridge will turn 100 in November, and the Roberto Clemente Bridge will reach that milestone in 2028.

Allegheny County thanks America Bridge Company for being a sponsor of the Andy Warhol Bridge Birthday Bash.
