DHS Internship Program
The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) offers a 10 to 12 week, hands-on internship program for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students. Interns work on real projects that support children, families, and communities across Allegheny County while gaining exposure to how local government operates and applying their skills in meaningful ways.
Program Highlights
- Hands-on work: Contribute to projects across DHS offices, from data and analytics to community services
- Mentorship: Connect with a DHS staff mentor for guidance and support
- Professional development: Attend workshops and senior speaker sessions that build practical skills
- Networking: Meet staff from across the agency and learn about different career paths
- Final project: Present your work to agency leaders at the end of the program
Program Details
- Compensation: $15/hour
- Schedule: up to 29 hours per week, flexible work hours
- Location: onsite in Pittsburgh, PA (hybrid work is not available at this time)
- Cohorts: spring (February start) and summer (June start)
- Eligibility: must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university and able to work onsite
Who We Are Looking For
Individuals ready to make a difference and eager to learn who bring:
- A current enrollment in an undergraduate, graduate, or PhD program and a desire to apply their studies to real-world public-service work
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- A collaborative mindset and willingness to contribute to a team that supports children, families, and communities across Allegheny County
- A proactive attitude; ask what’s next, take ownership of work, and look for ways to improve outcomes
- Comfort working in a diverse environment and adapting to change
- Availability to work up to 29 hours per week during the 10 to 12 week spring or summer cohort, onsite in Pittsburgh
- A commitment to being present and engaged for the full duration of the program
