The Allegheny County Jail held its Election Day for the primary election on Thursday, May 14, at the jail.
The jail has run elections at the facility for years and includes participation in special, primary and general elections during every year. Many incarcerated individuals are eligible to vote, and the jail helps them register and request absentee ballots to participate in the electoral process.
"Each election cycle motivates me and our team to enhance our efforts and inspire more incarcerated individuals to vote," said ACJ Correctional Support Program Manager Casey Walsh, seen in the photo sitting for an interview with NBC during the 2024 election cycle.
The jail had 32 participants in last week's primary election. Walsh and her caseworker team work throughout the year in partnership with League of Women Voters, the Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP) and West End P.O.W.E.R to hold voter education and registration events.
"I am honored to assist and collaborate in such an important civic responsibility," Walsh said. "Our incarcerated population deserves their right to be heard, and I know we are providing a great service to our community."
