Request a Disability Accommodation

Request an Accommodation

If you are an individual with a disability who needs an accommodation in order to participate in an Allegheny County service, program, or activity, you are entitled, at no cost to you, to the provision of certain assistance. Employees, residents, and visitors of Allegheny County can submit a Request for Reasonable Accommodations through the ADA Coordinator within the Office of Human Resources via completing the form, other written format, or orally.

Upon request by a qualified individual with a disability, this document will be made available in an alternate format. If you need assistance in completing this form due to your disability, or to request this document in an alternate format, please contact the ADA Coordinator:

Accommodation Request

Accommodations come in many forms and are addressed from a case-by-case basis. Allegheny County will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to enjoy all of its programs, services, and activities. For example, individuals with service animals are welcomed in Allegheny County offices, even where pets are generally prohibited.

The ADA does not require Allegheny County to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs or services, or impose an undue financial or administrative burden.

Accommodation Overview

A reasonable accommodation is a modification or change to a job, the work environment, or in the way things are customarily done that enables an individual with a disability to equally perform the essential job functions. Accommodations are considered reasonable if they do not create an undue hardship, direct threat, or remove essential job functions.

Essential job functions are duties that are fundamentally required by the nature of the position. A function may be essential if the position exists specifically to perform that function or there are limited number of other employees who could perform the function if it were assigned to them.

Reasonable accommodations may include and are not limited to:

  • Job restructuring
  • Modifications or adjustments to the work environment or work schedule
  • Modifications or adjustments to the job application
  • Acquiring or modifying equipment
  • Reassignment to a vacant position

Employee Request Process

Step 1.Notify Supervisor or Human Resources

Employees who believe that they have a disability necessitating an accommodation should inform one of the following:

  • Direct supervisor
  • Department of Human Resources

Employees should also contact UPMC WorkPartners at 1-855-396-8762 if the accommodation could include a modification or adjustment to the work schedule.

Step 2.Prepare Documentation

Documentation may be required to determine eligibility and need for accommodation. Failure to provide adequate and timely documentation may result in denial of an accommodation request.

Step 3.Approval Process

Approval of reasonable accommodations will be determined on a case-by-case basis as a result of information obtained through an interactive process.

If a reasonable accommodation is approved, Allegheny County will provide an effective, reasonable accommodation; this may not necessarily be the specific accommodation requested.
