Brett Whittenberger
Inspector Brett Whittenberger is assigned as the Division Commander for District 1 at Pittsburgh International Airport.
Previously, Inspector Brett Whittenberger was the Director of the Allegheny County Police Training Academy and was responsible for providing collaborative police training and education to all law enforcement stakeholders in Allegheny County.
Inspector Whittenberger began his law enforcement career in 2003 as a police officer in Butler County, Pennsylvania. In 2006, he joined the Allegheny County Police Department as a patrol officer assigned to District One at the Pittsburgh International Airport. Two years later, he transferred to the Investigative Division as a detective in Executive Protection, a role he held until 2011. From 2011 to 2018, he was detailed to the FBI Pittsburgh Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) as a task force officer, contributing to counterterrorism and national security efforts.
In 2018, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to District One as a patrol supervisor. In 2020, he was transferred to the Investigative Division as the unit commander for Internal Affairs. In 2022, Inspector Whittenberger was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and remained the unit commander for Internal Affairs. In 2023, he assumed the role of Director of the Allegheny County Police Training Academy.
In addition to his regular duties, Inspector Whittenberger serves as a team leader for the Crisis Negotiator Team and a coordinator for the police department’s Big Brother Big Sister program. Inspector Whittenberger is also a certified Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) general instructor and firearms instructor.
Inspector Whittenberger is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from La Roche College, a Master’s degree in Intelligence and Global Security from Point Park University, and a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia.
