Food Safety Program
The repeal and replacement of Article III, which governs ACHD’s permit and inspection of food facilities within Allegheny County, has been approved and will become effective January 1, 2023. This Food Safety Regulations page explains the update in greater detail.
The Food Safety Program monitors and regulates approximately 8,500 permanent food businesses ("food facilities") across Allegheny County. Establishments covered by our program include restaurants, retail markets, food processing facilities, caterers,
warehouses, mobile vendors, festivals, farmers markets, school cafeterias and nursing homes.
Our food safety regulatory efforts include both conducting comprehensive inspections and investigating consumer complaints. If you have
concerns about something you see or experience while dining out, please use our online complaint form to let us know.
All food facilities are required to obtain and maintain a health permit; and to operate according to Allegheny County food safety regulations.
Allegheny County Health Department offers Food Protection Manager Certification classes and exams to help ensure that food employees
know how to properly store and handle food.
The Food Safety Program works closely with the Food Safety Advisory Committee. The Committee holds regular, public meetings to discuss and advise
the Food Safety Program on emergent practices and issues in the food industry.
This Food Safety brochure provides an overview of our program's services and responsibilities.
