The Department of Human Services (DHS) offers training opportunities designed to strengthen skills and support evidence-based practices in behavioral health services. Trainings are provided virtually via Zoom and cover topics including Motivational Interviewing, Assertive Community Treatment, Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment, Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Supported Employment.

Introduction to Motivational Interviewing

Overview

This two-day workshop introduces participants to Motivational Interviewing (MI), a way of talking with people about change and growth. By intentionally guiding conversations, practitioners can help people explore and resolve ambivalence and strengthen their own motivation for change.

Participants will learn to apply MI in an interactive learning environment while exploring approaches that can enhance clients' confidence, motivation and commitment to change.

Outcomes

  • Understand and experience the spirit of Motivational Interviewing
  • Practice the core MI skills known as OARS: Open-Ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflections and Summarizing
  • Learn to recognize and respond to change talk and sustain talk

Motivational Interviewing Booster

Overview

This half-day workshop is designed for participants who have already completed the two-day Motivational Interviewing workshop and want additional opportunities to practice and strengthen their skills.

The workshop emphasizes demonstration and hands-on practice rather than lecture-based instruction, helping participants consolidate previous learning, deepen their skills and increase their understanding of Motivational Interviewing in practice.

Outcomes

  • Reinforce learning from the two-day Motivational Interviewing workshop
  • Deepen their Motivational Interviewing skills through additional practice
  • Increase their understanding of how to use Motivational Interviewing in practice

Prerequisite: Participants must have attended the two-day MI workshop within the past year.

Fundamentals of Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Teams

Overview

This three-day training provides a comprehensive review of the evidence-based practice models within the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model.

Participants will examine treatment and rehabilitative interventions based on ACT, Person-Centered Planning, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Supported Employment and Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment.

This training is required for all new ACT/CTT staff. Participants must attend all three days.

Outcomes

  • Understand ACT multidisciplinary staff structure, team communication and the ten key characteristics of an ACT team.
  • Understand the fundamentals and key characteristics of the Person-Centered Treatment Planning process.
  • Understand the Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment and Supported Employment models, including how to document specialty interventions associated with these models.

Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT)

Overview

This half-day workshop introduces the Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) model, an evidence-based practice designed to improve quality of life for people with co-occurring severe mental illness and substance use disorders.

Participants will learn about integrated treatment, stages of change and stages of treatment, and how to develop interventions appropriate to each stage. The training also reviews team member responsibilities and the role of Co-Occurring Disorders Specialists in staging and providing clinical interventions.

Outcomes

  • Understand the Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment model and the importance of providing stage-appropriate interventions
  • Demonstrate the ability to match a client's stage of change with appropriate interventions

Psychiatric Rehabilitation (PR)

Overview

This half-day workshop focuses on psychiatric rehabilitation services, which are client-centered, strength-based services designed to promote self-determination, skill development and connection to resources that support independent living.

Participants will learn how to identify an individual's learning style and use that information when teaching psychiatric rehabilitation skills. The workshop also covers assessing housing and skill-building needs, developing individualized plans and documenting services so treatment plans accurately reflect the psychiatric rehabilitation approach.

Outcomes

  • Understand Psychiatric Rehabilitation as it relates to fidelity
  • Understand different learning styles and how they affect the teaching of skills
  • Learn approaches for assessing skill needs. Learn how to document psychiatric rehabilitation skills and teaching

Supported Employment: Tools of the Trade

Overview

This half-day workshop introduces participants to the evidence-based Supported Employment model and the skills needed to engage clients in considering employment and support them after they obtain a job.

Participants will also learn about the tools and documents needed to implement high-fidelity Supported Employment on a CTT team or in other agencies.

Outcomes

  • Review the Eight Core Principles of Supported Employment and the step-by-step Supported Employment workflow
  • Review the tools and documents used to implement high-fidelity Supported Employment
  • Reinforce the importance of involving the whole team in the Supported Employment process
