Application Process

General Application Material

  • A fully completed Internship Application(PDF, 184KB)
  • A 250 - 500 word Mission Statement communicating your goals, objectives, and values as well as why you are applying for the internship and what you hope to receive from your experience
  • Resume
  • Two Personal/Professional Recommendation Letters
  • Scholarship Application Material (if applying for scholarship)

Due Dates

The General Application Material must be postmarked by the due date specified below.

Medical Student Rotation

Term as Specified in the Application

  • Application Due Date: 2 months prior to the specified rotation time
  • Notification Date: 1 month prior to the specified rotation time

Forensic Internship

Spring Internship Term

  • January - April
  • Application Due Date: November 15
  • Notification Date: November 25

Summer Internship Term

  • May - August
  • Application Due Date: March 15
  • Notification Date: March 25

Fall Internship Term

  • September - December
  • Application Due Date: July 15
  • Notification Date: July 25

Selection Criteria

  • Only applications postmarked by the due date for the requested rotation period or internship term will be considered.
  • Incomplete applications including omitted material will not be considered.
  • Priority for the Forensic Internship program will be given to those applicants who are in their Junior and Senior year of University at the time of the application.
  • Priority for the Medical School rotation will be given to those applicants who are enrolled/accepted to a medical school at time of application.

Award and Notification

Applicants will be notified no later than the dates listed above via email.

Notification of Scholarship award will occur in concurrence with award/appointment.

Upon acceptance offer of appointment, a $500 Medical Student Rotation / Forensic Internship Program fee will be due within two weeks of acceptance. Payment must be made via check/money order.

Conditions of Appointment

The Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner (ACOME) reserves the right to rescind or terminate appointment to the Medical Student Rotation or Forensic Internship program without reimbursement of any fees in the event that the awardee violates Allegheny County workplace rules, breaches the confidentiality agreement, or demonstrates a behavior that is unprofessional and not in alignment with the expectations or mission of this office.
