Several Allegheny County departments offer internship opportunities for individuals enrolled in higher education. These internships offer students the chance to gain valuable professional experience while helping to serve the Allegheny County community.

Internships by Department

County Executive's Office

The Allegheny County Executive Office is seeking creative, hard-working, skilled, and highly collaborative graduate and undergraduate students for Internships. Our interns will help transform Allegheny County government into an accountable, transparent, and responsive force that delivers housing, safety, opportunity, health, and high-quality service to every population, in every neighborhood of the over 100 municipalities included in the County.

Health Department

The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) provides learning opportunities for students enrolled in a variety of academic programs. To be eligible for an internship at ACHD a student must be actively enrolled in one of the partner colleges or universities.

The Health Department also provides clinical learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate nursing students. To learn more about clinical learning experiences, contact ACHD’s Chief Nursing Officer.

The National Health Corps (NHC) Pittsburgh, a program of the National Health Corps AmeriCorps program, is committed to decreasing disparities in local healthcare delivery systems and promoting health. NHC Pittsburgh collaborates with a broad range of sites to ensure members are exposed to diverse opportunities in public health. Human Services

The Department of Human Services (DHS) is currently hiring interns for summer and school-year internships in several offices. Interested students are encouraged to apply for open internship positions.

To be eligible for these on-site internships, applicants must be currently enrolled in higher education (including undergraduate, graduate/professional degree, or doctoral students), and must either be legal residents of Allegheny County or attending a college or university in Allegheny County.

Kane Community Living Centers

The Kane Community Living Centers provide educational opportunities for students interested in launching a career in healthcare.

Internships are generally available on a semester basis (spring, fall, and summer) but can be tailored to fit each individual's needs. Areas of interest include: accounting and finance, therapeutic recreation, human resources, social services, and healthcare marketing.

Marketing and Special Events

The Office of Marketing and Special Events offers paid summer internships as well as year-round, for-credit internships in the areas of special events, graphic design, venue marketing, digital marketing, and videography/multimedia.

Medical Examiner

The Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner (ACOME) offers two unique opportunities to get hands-on experience within the Medical Examiner’s Office and Forensic Laboratory.

The Medical Student Rotation is designed for medical students interested in pursuing a career in the field of forensic pathology. The medical student rotation timeline will be flexible based on the requested term period specified by the applicant, with an expected commitment of 20-40 hours per week.

The Forensic Internship is intended for college students and graduates interested in pursuing a career in a Forensic Laboratory or within Medicolegal Death Investigations. The Forensic Internship is offered on a trimester schedule, with a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week to be completed over a 12-week period.

Public Defenders Office

The Allegheny County Public Defenders Office offers internship opportunities for both law students and undergraduate students.

Public Works

The Department of Public Works is looking for an intern enrolled in an engineering program at an accredited university and in good academic standing to support the department’s Bridge, Roads and Construction Divisions. The intern will work under the supervision of the Deputy Director for Engineering and will be compensated.

Additional Opportunities

Learn & Earn

Learn and Earn is a six-week summer employment program for teens and young adults ages 14-21 in Allegheny County and the Pittsburgh region. Participants have the opportunity to earn money, gain valuable work experience, and develop soft skills to help them prepare for college and professional life. This program is made possible through a partnership between Allegheny County, the City of Pittsburgh, and Partner4Work with support from local foundations. Learn more and apply online.
