DHS offers a transformative 10-13 week internship program for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD students, empowering them to gain valuable exposure to local government services.

Internship Opportunities

Behavioral Health Fellows Program

The Behavioral Health (BH) Fellows Program, created by Allegheny County DHS in partnership with Community Care Behavioral Health and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, provides behavioral health direct care workers with student loan repayment while earning a competitive salary. This program supports professionals who serve the county’s most vulnerable populations.

What We Offer

  • Student Loan Repayment – Receive up to $25,000 (bachelor’s) or $45,000 (master’s) in tax-free loan forgiveness.
  • Competitive Pay – Earn a salary while gaining hands-on experience.

AmeriCorps KEYS Program

The KEYS Program, a collaboration between the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and the Pennsylvania Commission, helps community college students gain experience and training for careers in education and community support.

What We Offer

  • Hands-On Experience – Work directly with children and communities.
  • Networking Opportunities – Connect with education professionals.
  • Flexible Enrollment – Start in May, August, October, or January with various program lengths available.

Who Should Apply?

  • Must be 19 years or older.
  • Prior experience working with children is preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident.
  • Must pass required background clearances.

Children, Youth & Families (CYF) Casework Support Internship

The CYF Casework Support Internship is a paid opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students in social work, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or related fields. This internship provides hands-on experience in child welfare and family services.

What We Offer
